Sharpening Weapon Screws
« on: October 17, 2016, 01:02:52 pm »
Hello, friends.

I've heard that using a mill to take off the very top of the screw to make it's edge sharp works quite well. However, since I am without the luxuries of large and expensive mills, what would the best method be (in your opinion) for me to sharpen up my weapon screws? All I really own are some basic hand tools, a dremel, and an angle grinder.

I think your next best option would be the angle grinder and steady hands.  You only need to take off about .02" from the top.

Isn't that a bit overkill? Or will that just get the job done quicker than a dremel?

put a piece of sand paper on a flat table or lay down a file and then you can precisely rub off small amounts of material by pressing the screw head down into it.

Files don't cut screws so good, dremel or angle grinder is good. To hold them I'd take a nut and cut a slit in it, screw in the screw and clamp it in a vise so the split nut clamps the screw without damaging it.

^ I'm loving that split nut idea for clamping screws.

the split screw idea would actually solve the problem I have with the screw slowly moving out of place when I grind it. Thanks for that suggestion :)
