1 the width is fine
2 making a weapon like uc2 would break on a wide weapon
3 if you go weapon to weapon with a downward spinning asymmetrical disk it will break anything
4 im not making a new beater

It probably is fine. The way you said it earlier just made me think it broke just hitting another bot.

The UC2 comparison was just for the width of the inner bar.

Again, I didn't know exactly how it broke.

And last, I was just curious, I'm building a bot too, you know.

I put something like servo tape underneath the negative tab so its not touching the positively charged can

I was talking something for between the cells. Ed had some over heat and melt the plastic shrink causing them to short on themselves.

Hmmm... My packs all just use shrinkwrap to isolate the cells from eachother.  My packs don't get too warm though as I usually run more cells / less current to keep heat down somewhat.  If you're really pushing them something else as a spacer might be good, but it seems like the cardboard sleeves would hold in heat too much in that case.

I'm pretty sure the original A123 cells had cardboard sleeves and no shrink, then the switched to just shrinkwrap versions. If your packs are getting so hot that the shrink melts off then the batteries are probably overtaxed too. Of course there's always extra current draw caused by combat damage that's hard to adjust for.

Lucas, what size/shape packs are you making, and for what size bot?  I can't tell from your description, are you talking about isolating the battery bars from the cell cans for the button ends with servo tape? I have messed up when soldering battery bars on a couple of times and melted through the shrink there. Not my best day building bots - I don't recommend it :) Edit: though, on the up side, there wasn't a giant fire ball like there would be if I did something silly like that to a lipo pack.

My brothers 15lb bot pulls about 108ish amps at start up, making 2s1p two packs will go in series, and yes servo tape underneath the bar connected for the button ends

Zac, if you meant to put my name there, you misread, I wasn't talking about battery packs.
I switched to flat pack LiFes this year (can't run Lipos in the MRL/NRL), much easier than screwing around with A123s and I had enough room to not have to split up the pack this time.
I made some A123 packs last year but I didn't have tabs and I'm pretty sure I lost a bit of capacity messing around with the side that's hard to solder to. The other side is a piece of cake, though.

This is what they look like before we wrapped them in electrical tape

Hey Don, where do you get the 36mm gearboxes, anyways? Are they old ones you've had for a while, or is there someplace I don't know about selling them? AFAIK Banebots discontinued them a while ago, right?
