General Robotics Discussion / lathe Identification?
« on: October 28, 2016, 09:30:01 am »
We came across this lathe at a silent auction (Don't know if we won it yet). It looks to be in GREAT condition. Just not to sure if it could be easily modified to be useful for bot parts. I don't know too much about lathes, but my best guess is that this may be a metal spinning lathe? I'm also guessing that it's around 100 years old?

If anyone can help shine some light on what type of lathe this is, roughly how old it is, and if it can be used for making bot parts we would greatly appreciate it.

This motor mount set will allow you to easily install the Botkits 22mm Gearmotor in any system that is currently using the Kitbots 1000RPM motors & mounting plates.

This set includes:
  • ( 2 ) Motor Mounts
  • ( 8 ) M2x.4mm screws (to fasten the mount to the motor)
*Actual motors are not included*

  • Weights: .1oz each OR .2oz for the pair. (this include the weight of supplied screws)
  • Material: 3D printed ABS - Natural White

Price is $10 per set + $5 shipping for the order.

Projects / Tradeshow display
« on: February 24, 2016, 11:05:22 am »
I work for a door manufacturer and was asked to build a tradeshow display. The goal was to have a motorized revolving door. I figured it should spin at around 1-5 RPM (Very hard for me to not go nuts and have this thing spinning at 2K RPM!!) Spinny things should spin FAST!

The design is complete and parts are ordered, on to fabrication and assembly.

For a sense of scale, the base is 1/4" 6061 and is 48" dia. Overall the unit is 90" tall and weighs about 200lbs

Battlebots got the green light for season 2. Looks like this season the number of bots is getting doubled and it may be an open invitation!

This concept is actually pretty cool. I think this could be a natural fit in our community (could be used in place of nutstrip). The only downside is that I have not been able to find someone that simply sells stock online. But check out the videos from the manufacturers.

Skills / Tips & Tricks / Magnesium as a build material
« on: October 14, 2015, 12:23:49 pm »
I would be interested to know if anyone has had any success or failures using Mg in their bots (Arena Tested). I have been kicking the idea around for awhile because what I can see most alloys seem to be about 2/3's as dense as Al.

Below is a link to a good resource that I found regarding the machinability of Mg. Thought I would share with everyone.

And here seems to be the only "online" store I can find that sells Mg plate.

North America / Rage In The Cage (OPEN TOURNAMENT) May 3, 2015
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:34:02 am »

Hosted by Team(s) Dreadfully Wicked & AstroBot

We are going to try to run registration through a combination of this Forum & Email.

Clear your calendar for the combat robotics event of the year! The full event takes place over the course of 2 days, the educational event on Saturday, and the OPEN TOURNAMENT on Sunday.
(This thread is intended to only handle the registration for the OPEN TOURNAMENT)
All information regarding the Educational Event will be handled through Kirk Marshall at

This impressive 1st class arena is owned & operated by the Bloomsburg Area High School Engineering Club. Any OPEN TOURNAMENT competitors that are available to volunteer their time for the educational event on Saturday would be most appreciated. As we all know it takes a lot of effort to assemble/tear down arenas and get everyone through safety. Please keep in mind that Saturday's event features students, and we are asked to keep our demeanor professional. This puts us in the unique area to be able to mentor teams, which comes with great responsibility!

The tournament is being held at the Lycoming Mall, 300 Lycoming Mall Cir, Muncy, 17756.
This tournament is open to the public so all are welcome to watch the excitement.
We will be capping the registration at 32 robot teams due to time and space constraints.

... More info to come SHORTLY!!
